The Centers for Disease Control estimates that 50 percent of Americans are overweight -- and fully 14 percent are "officially" obese (for a poignant firsthand account, see page 14).
- Kayle Hand Northern Colorado Springs - - Student - - Why is America getting fatter? Because they're lazy. - - Why is there a social stigma when it comes to obesity? Sometimes there are a lot of things they can't do that other people can, like sports and other physical activities. - - Would you rather be too skinny or too fat? I'd rather be too skinny. - - What diets actually work? I don't think any diet really works as much as exercising and making sure what you eat is healthy. -

Devon Ryan Knob Hill - - Paralegal - - Why are so many Americans overweight? We don't eat well. We eat too big of portions, too many carbs and too much fat. We just don't eat well and we don't exercise enough. - - What's the difference between being overweight and obesity? It is a state of mind. It's a matter of whether or not you're just going to let yourself go or whether you're still working at it. I know I'm going to keep working at it until I get it. - - Why do people have a negative view of obesity? A lot of people believe that if you just had enough will power or if you just did this or that, then you wouldn't be obese. Frankly, being overweight is a struggle and a lot of people don't get how hard it is to keep trying and not succeed. - - Would you prefer to be too skinny or too fat? I wouldn't want to be either. I know I'm too fat but I wouldn't want to go to the other end. There are health problems on both ends. I would prefer to be right in the middle of my ideal range. -

Nicki Tibbits West Colorado Springs - - Janitor - - Why are Americans getting fatter? Stress. A lot of emotional stress. - - What's the difference between being overweight and being obese? Probably a few hundred pounds. Obesity is the extreme form of being overweight. - - Why is there a social stigma concerning obesity? Probably because everyone wants to be good looking. People think that if you're not good looking then something has got to be wrong with you. It stems from how we're raised. Since I have kids and they worry about these problems I think it comes from how you are raised. - - What diets actually work? The diets that involve eating right and exercising. -
