Are there major problems with public education? Yes. I come from a family of teachers, and I can tell you that the government is asking schools to do too much. Their mission is to teach, but they're being asked to do far more than that. Also, teachers need more autonomy within the classroom.
What are the strengths of public education? A democracy depends on having an educated and well-informed public. A broad-based system of public education is essential for that. It's one of the missions of public education to prevent elitism.
Were you educated in public schools? I attended public schools in Iowa, and I graduated from Cheyenne Mountain High School.
Did public education equip you to succeed in life? I had a fine education. Public education has problems that need to be addressed, though.
What are the main problems with public education? Mostly, students who aren't motivated and cause classroom distractions. Kids who don't take advantage of the educational opportunities that are there. But there's also room for improvement in teaching methods and in making education more interesting. Also, I don't see parents caring enough about their kids' performance.
What are the strengths of public education? I know this contradicts what I just said, but I see schools and a lot of teachers trying to find innovative ways to teach, so that it's not just a collection of facts.
Were you educated in public schools? I attended K-12 parochial schools in Denver.
If you could change one thing about public education, what would it be? I'd increase teachers' salaries across the board. They do an incredible job for what they're paid. They don't get paid nearly what they're worth.

What are its strengths? It gives every citizen access to a free education. I think that's extremely important.
What values guide your vote in school elections? I vote for school board candidates who look out for the interests of the kids, not the ideology of the parents.
Did you attend public schools? Yes.
Did you get a good education? Mixed. In high school, kids in certain cliques got more attention than other kids. Many of the more introverted or unpopular kids fell through the cracks.
