Fifth Annual Small Works Show

When: Dec. 7-Jan. 4 2013

My grandma and I love mincemeat pie for the holidays, though it comes with a side of disdain from the rest of the family. But what's a tradition without its quirks, right? Locally, the Modbo (17C E. Bijou St., themodbo.wordpress.com) has cultivated quite a tradition with its Fifth Annual Small Works Show, an exhibit and sale featuring affordable artwork no larger than two feet in any direction. The show, hung floor to ceiling at both the Modbo and neighboring S.P.Q.R., opens tonight with a reception starting at 5:30. For something funkier, head to Marmalade at Smokebrush (219 W. Colorado Ave., #210, smokebrush.org) for Chriszaihamankus, a group show featuring works by the Smokebrush crew and other local artists. Tonight's opening reception, starting at 6, features a short play, performance art, live music and "special appearance by the Two-Headed Santa." — Edie Adelstein
