City adds new bus route

Overcrowding has led the city to add a new bus route beginning on May 19.

Mountain Metropolitan Transit Route 14 to El Paso County's Citizen Service Center on Garden of the Gods Road has been besieged by passengers, City Chief of Staff Steve Cox said at a morning media briefing.

“We’ve gotten to the point where it's standing room only,” he said, adding that the bus is running late due to extended stops to pick up and drop of passengers.

What's more, those who miss the Route 14 bus have to wait an hour for the next bus. Thankfully, relief is on the way. The city will open Route 2, which will run along a similar path, later this month. Route 2 will also drop by the Veteran's Affairs Clinic that's opening August 18.

The new route will be funded with excess Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority dollars, which are expected to be approved by the board soon. It's projected that the PPRTA will be able to continue funding the bus for at least the next five years.

Route 2 will run five and a half hours on weekdays from May 19 through September 8.  After September 8, it will run 10 hours a day on weekdays and Saturday.
