Get the science behind booze, beer and wine

Next week's 2013 Colorado Springs Cool Science Festival is going to get jiggy with a huge variety of topics over its nine days, but the ones most relevant to my interests involve alcohol. (Naturally.) If you're of a similar mind, here's where you should spend your time:

Whiskey Distillation Science will offer participants a chance to hang with Distillery 291 and "learn more about what it takes to create the perfect shot." 3 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8, and Wednesday, Oct. 9. $3 per reservation.

The Science of Winemaking gives participants the chance to get down with some vino while simultaneously learning about the science behind it. 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at D'Vine Wine. $3 per reservation.

Beer Brewing Science at Bristol Brewing is, as you would imagine, exactly what it sounds like: "Get a behind the scenes understanding of brewing with a tour as well as a discussion of the microbiology and biochemistry of fermentation." 3 to 4 p.m., and again 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., on Sunday, Oct. 13. Tour is free, reservations are $3.
