A ban on all solicitation — even passively sitting with a sign asking for spare change — is likely to go into effect in the core downtown area on Dec. 2.
City Council passed a no panhandling/solicitation ordinance on first read last night. The vote was 8-1, with Councilor Val Snider casting the no vote.
More than a dozen people spoke on the issue, with many in support. Others said an all-out ban wasn't the right solution, but agreed panhandling was causing problems.
City Council will need to vote once more on the issue before it moves on to become law.
