MeadowGrass is a mere seven months away, which means it's time for the unveiling of the music festival's first headliner. Organizers of the Memorial Day weekend event, now in its fifth year on the rustic grounds of the La Foret Conference & Retreat Center, announced this week that Throwing Muses singer/guitarist Kristin Hersh — not to be confused with poppier co-frontwoman Tanya Donelly — has signed on to perform a solo set.

In addition to keeping the band going after Donelly left to form Belly in the early '90s, Hersh released a series of solo albums, fronted the power trio 50 Foot Wave, and authored 2010's autobiographical Rat Girl, which was named one of the "25 Greatest Rock Memoirs of All Time" by Rolling Stone.

Influenced by early punk-era artists like Patti Smith and the Raincoats, Hersh's songs are often sparse and impressionistic, which helps explain why Throwing Muses were the first American band signed to England's artsy 4AD Records.

The festival also announced that local acts Chauncy Crandall and the Charlie Milo Trio will be performing at next year's event, for which a limited edition of 100 full-weekend "loyalty passes" are currently selling for $50. Details at meadowgrass.org.
