Last week, while reporting on El Paso County commissioner candidate Karen Magistrelli's High Winds nonprofit residential facility, we were told by Magistrelli that a deputy with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office had recently paid a visit.
We were told by Magistrelli that this was in response to an anonymous tip that her daughter lives on the property with her grandchild. One of her boarders, Rodney Phillips, is a sex offender who is still on probation. He was told that he would have to move, which he has subsequently done.
We called the sheriff's office to confirm this claim, and were told by Sgt. Mike Schaller that a deputy had indeed visited the Magistrellis' home. This is what we reported.
Today, we were contacted by Schaller, who nows says that this was a miscommunication. He says that a deputy did not visit the Magistrellis in response to a tip. He says that the last time that the sheriff's office visited High Winds was on March 11, as part of a routine check.
As of late Thursday afternoon, it was still unclear what law enforcement agency visited High Winds.
