Gazette ghosts still among us?

Twelve days after the Gazette laid off a dozen or so people, including some key journalists in the newsroom, their names are still listed as contacts on the Gazette website.

Sorry, but it seems more than strange for the daily newspaper to claim that the so-called reorganization was aimed at improving its digital coverage, and then it fails to remove the bodies from its website.

Is the newspaper trying to pretend it has staff it no longer has? Or is the new management, led by content editor Carmen Boles, falling down on the job already?

On Dec. 1, the Gazette sent a bunch of people packing, including deputy city editor Joel Millman, photo editor Stuart Wong, county reporter Debbie Kelley, sports writer Joe Paisley, David Bean and news desk chief Mike Eiler. The newspaper reported that editor Jeff Thomas resigned his job effective Dec.31, but it's hard to imagine it was a voluntary separation.

In any event, all of those people still have contact information on the website as if nothing happened. Although if you call one of the numbers listed for the MIAs, you'll find the those still standing have placed voice messages to replace the departed: Dena Rosenberry for Joel Millman; Mark Reis for Stuart Wong; Joanna Bean for Debbie Kelley, and so forth.
