’Tis the season we get our annual update of The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey's medal earnings at the Jerry Mead New World International Wine Competition.

The competition, considered one of the most prestigious, is held annually in California. It is the only wine competition in America, and perhaps the world, that judges wines of the same pricing against one another to choose the best in each pricing category. The competition is open to wines produced anywhere in the "New World", including all of North America, Central America, and South America, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

And the Abbey's hefty take:

The apple blossom wine, just released on May 5, retails for $14 and is limited to 1,100 cases. It's made 100 percent from Cañon City-grown apples from Colon Orchards. It's an awesome, sweet spring/early summer wine that pairs easily with food or is wonderfully refreshing on its own.

Other recent releases include the Sangre de Cristo Nouveau ($15), another sugary, fruity wine served cold, though it's a red wine.

From samples the winery kindly sent us, I've yet to open this year's apple blossom wine or Nouveau (I'm waiting for the weather to warm a bit more for a mini garden party), but I've greatly enjoyed previous year's batches.

I did however get to the 2009 Colorado Merlot Reserve ($28), made from grapes off of two Palisade vineyards. It's a big wine with oak notes that I brought to a dinner party where the capable host served both venison and pronghorn. The wine paired great and earned comments from around the table, including the usual surprise over a Colorado wine being so good.

We'll test out the 2010 Sauvignon Blanc Reserve ($19) and 2009 Colorado Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve ($32) soon. The former is limited to 460 cases and said to boast a light, grassy, honeysuckle and sweet oak vibe; the latter is limited to 205 cases and promotes grapes from three different Palisade wineries for "ripe berry fruit" flavors and toasted oak, good to be aged up to seven years.

So congrats to the Abbey and thanks to those folks again for the samples.

In other Abbey winery news, it currently has a call for artists out for help in designing the 10th annual Jubilee Harvest Fest promotional materials, to include labels, posters and the like.

Artwork, with the artist’s bio, must be delivered to the winery tasting room at 3011 East Highway 50 in Cañon City no later than Monday June 27th. The judging will be held on July 1st, and a showing for all the artists and their entries and artwork will be held in the Abbey Winery park on Saturday, July 9th at 2:00pm. The winning artist will receive $500, a complimentary booth at the harvest fest where the posters will be signed and sold, and a seat of honor at the Winemaker’s Dinner on Friday, September 23rd. The 1st runner-up artist will also receive a complimentary booth at the harvest fest.
