In early April, we wished our local culinary students the best of luck at the American Culinary Federation Western Regional Conference, held April 30 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Today, we heard from the ACF, with news that the team from Colorado Springs won the Jeopardy-style culinary knowledge competition, while the ACF Pikes Peak Chapter was awarded the regional Chapter of the Year.

The winning team was comprised of Katherine Conlon, Liberty Blechman, Patrick Patterson, Debra Schmidt and Robin Flynn (pictured from left to right), who were coached by Heidi Block and Leslie Bender (not pictured, obviously).

A little more on the knowledge competition:

ACF knowledge bowls are open to junior culinary teams from ACF chapters, apprenticeship programs and accredited schools. Competition questions are drawn from five nationally published textbooks for culinary professionals that cover topics such as nutrition, safety and sanitation and the art of modern cooking. The tournament is formatted using a “Jeopardy”-style, five-by-four matrix board for games leading to the final round, and a five-by-five matrix board for the final round. At the national finals during the 2011 ACF National Convention in Dallas, July 22-26, four teams will compete and the highest scorer will be named the winner.
