City Clerk Kathryn Young has just announced at about 10 p.m. that she's sending home her staff for the night, with as many as an estimated 5,000 to 9,000 ballots still uncounted in the city election.

Only one race remains undecided: the District 3 City Council contest. At the last 10:28 p.m. update, Lisa Czelatdko was leading Michael Merrifield by 154 votes, or 8,574 to 8,420. Merrifield was not conceding but was clearly disappointed in the trend, while Czelatdko was excited that her initial margin of 110 votes had slightly increased.

Meanwhile, sitting Councilor Sean Paige was headed for defeat in the Council at-large race, along with Douglas Bruce and his Reform Team of four allies.

Young's staff will return Wednesday morning to conclude their count, with final results expected in the afternoon.

A few notes about the above:

• Though not final, these numbers should represent the lion's share of votes that've been cast for this election. As of the end of day yesterday, there were 65,264 ballots cast — so 72,000 represents all those, plus a few thousand that trickled in today.

• If the Skorman camp had expected a larger lead over Bach and the rest, no one at Stargazers Theatre & Event Center was letting on tonight. According to J. Adrian Stanley, who was there when the numbers were announced, it was a very upbeat atmosphere. As a lot of young campaign workers scurried about, clutching their smartphones, Skorman told the Indy, "I don't think there's a clear vote for either of us. ... It's going to be intense."

• In the at-large Council race, you read it correctly: Copy man Bircham is ahead of Bruce, his Reform Team leader, and as of now neither would have enough votes to make it onto Council.

• The city clerk has indicated that updates should come every half hour this evening. We'll keep you posted.
