As we mentioned in today's Crop Clash feature, we're currently inside the most bountiful harvest window of the growing season. That said, there's an unusually plentiful amount of food events happening in the community over the next several weeks, a few of which will kick off today's roundup of food news.
• The Colorado College Students Farm will host its third annual Harvest Banquet in the Bemis Great Hall on campus at 6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 16. Seats, $30 a head or $50 a couple, go toward materials and supplies for next year's organically grown crop. Reserve a spot at email@example.com.
• Pizzeria Rustica will host a local food and wine dinner at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 14, featuring five courses prepared with Venetucci Farm products and five Guy Drew Vineyards wines from Cortez, Colo. Seats are $49 plus tax/tip. Call 475-9700 for reservations.
• Pikes Peak Urban Gardens will present a 90-minute "How to Grow Great Garlic" class at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 2 at Harlan Wolfe Ranch (925 W. Cheyenne Road). Entry is $10 and includes a tasting of more than a dozen garlic varieties as well as take-home bulbs for planting. RSVP online.
• This Saturday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m., Garden of the Gods Gourmet will host a Hawaiian Luau "grazing dinner" to benefit Goodwill Industries of Colorado Springs. The event will feature six appetizer samplings, four entrees and two sweets for $20 per person. A cash bar will be on hand as well. Reserve a spot at 471-2799.
• A Taste of Palmer Lake is coming to — you guessed it — Palmer Lake from noon to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 25. Area eateries will provide samples for $10 a head ($5 kids under 12 and $25 for family of four). Call 481-0475 for details.
• The Colorado College Community Kitchen and Care and Share will host a H.A.M. JAM from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 26 in hopes of raising awareness about hunger nationwide. The event will feature music, an open mic and free hamburgers, brats and veggie burgers, though guests are asking to bring a salad or side item to share. Cake and ice cream will also be provided at no charge. Call 389-6846 for details.
• Nosh launched a new menu yesterday (Sept. 8), in which the "Out There" section of the list has been replaced by a "Your Momma's House" section with items such as pot roast and chicken parmesan "done Nosh style."
• Lastly, take part in the "first-ever" Colorado Virtual Beer Tasting with Oskar Blues tonight at 7 on either Twitter, Facebook, any beer blog or the Beer Bloggers Conference website. The instructions are as follows:
1. Go to the store and purchase a couple of different varieties of Colorado beer. Ideally, Oskar Blue beer.
2. At 7:00 PM MST (9:00 PM EST, 6:00 PM PST) crack open the first beer in a resounding chorus heard around the web.
3. Sniff, taste, and write about your thoughts on a beer via your favorite online websites and social media sites.
4. Enjoy and learn what others are tasting and thinking about Colorado craft beer.
