Local artist receives lifetime achievement award

Senga Nengudi recently received a 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York-based Women's Caucus for Art. The WCA chooses about 10 women per year to honor for "the contributions made by women who have distinguished themselves by their activism and commitment to the women's movement and the arts."

Past winners include: Georgia O'Keeffe, Gloria Steinem, Lee Krasner, Yoko Ono, Kay WalkingStick (read more about WalkingStick's recent show at the Fine Arts Center here) and Louise Bourgeois.

Nengudi's visual oeuvre includes sculpture, installation and performance art, but she also works part-time in the youth program at the Imagination Celebration. She's also an instructor specializing in the art of women of color and indigenous arts at UCCS. (There, she goes by her full name of Senga Nengudi-Fittz).
