Here's some additional food-related news I wasn't able to squeeze into this week's Side Dish:
Firstly, Venetucci Farm does still have some community-supported agriculture (CSA) shares available for this summer. This from Michael Hannigan, executive director of the Pikes Peak Community Foundation (which oversees the program):
This year the Venetucci Farm CSA Program offers two CSA options, enabling you to choose which best suits your family's eating habits. Traditional Share: A diverse assortment of vegetables and herbs, including heirloom varieties, providing a delicious sampling of flavor and color. Traditional shares are $520 for the entire season. Choice Share: Purchase farmstand credit, and have your pick of veggies, eggs and meat at a sweet 10% discount at any of our three weekly farmer's markets, until your credit is spent. Choice shares are $700 for the entire season. Both options run for 19 weeks starting in June, with pickup farmstands at Venetucci Farm, Margarita at Pine Creek, or Colorado Farm and Art Market (CFAM) - America the Beautiful Park.
My girlfriend and I signed up for Venetucci's first year of CSA offerings two years ago and really enjoyed the program. (We've since focused on our own backyard more, supplemented by farmers market trips.)
Second: a shout-out to last Saturday's 17th annual Mumbo Jumbo Gumbo Cook-off winners. This from the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau:
The Stagecoach Inn was voted best among the professionals, with The Ritz Grill, and Whole Foods Market following behind for 2nd and 3rd places. Frank Jakowich, Parker, Colorado, took top honors in amateur division. Jose Gonzalez, Jr. was awarded 2nd place, and Thom Herold, ranked 3rd. This year, the People’s Choice Award was presented to Whole Foods Market and the Showmanship Award went to Steve and Cindy Maniscalo.
Third: Wine tastings are a dime a dozen, to employ a cliché as cliché as generic wine tastings themselves. (With me still?) But a port tasting is a little more unique.
