Gen. Gene Renuart, head of the North American Aerospace Defense Command and Northern Command, will retire July 1 after 39 years in the Air Force, he told The Associated Press in an interview.
Renuart has led the commands for three years, during which time NORAD, amid much criticism, has completed its move from Cheyenne Mountain to Peterson Air Force Base. He also oversaw the integration of maritime surveillance, a NORAD mission added to the bi-national agreement with Canada in May 2006, 10 months before he arrived as commander in March 2007, and supervised the command's integration of cyber monitoring and protection.
Renuart, a fighter pilot, is to be succeeded by Navy Vice Adm. James A. Winnefeld Jr., although Winnefeld has not yet been confirmed.
