James Ray, who built a national reputation and following for his self-help enterprises until three deaths last October at a "sweat lodge" event in Arizona, has been arrested and jailed in Prescott, Ariz., with a bond of $5 million after a grand-jury indictment charged him with three counts of manslaughter.
Independent readers might remember that, just days after the sweat lodge deaths, Ray appeared in Colorado Springs for an event, trying to drum up more customers for his business ventures. Our reporter Anthony Lane covered the event at the Antlers Hotel, and his Oct. 29 story, headlined "Sweating the details," can be found here.
The deaths happened after a "Spiritual Warrior" event at Angel Valley Retreat Center, south of Flagstaff near Sedona. About 20 of the 60-plus participants were overcome by the heat and steam inside the sweat lodge. Two died that day, Oct. 8, and another died a week later.
