Greetings from 'Bama

Hanukkah begins tonight at sundown, and I'm home with my family in Birmingham, Ala. It's the first Hanukkah I've made it back in town for in almost 10 years. So I'm excited to cook potato latkes with my dad tonight. Three years ago, I shared our family's recipe along with a killer sweet potato version that we nabbed from a Jewish cookbook.

So if you want to find out why, from a strictly gustatory standpoint, we Jews look forward to this holiday, make up a batch of each sometime in the next eight days to show solidaridy with whoever made you go to his/her bar/bat mitzvah back in the day. Or if you're totally Jewish-friend bereft, take down a plate while watching a crappy Adam Sandler movie.

One more food note before I lose at least one tiny patch of skin to a vegetable peeler (grating potatoes is so much fun!): I was out driving around some new, upscale developments last night and noticed Flip Burger Boutique, an extention of an Atlanta, Ga. restaurant with really flashy decor and an alluring menu.

Dig the A5 Burger with Kobe beef topped in foie gras, pickles and red wine syrup. Um ... yeah.

Anyone in the Springs seeking a franchise eatery would be wise to hit these guys up. Or "borrow" their idea to do something similar with gourmet burgers.
