If you see lines outside local record stores or rodents dancing in the streets, it’s no doubt because today marks the official release of The Squeakuel, a new soundtrack album by Alvin & the Chipmunks...
... The Dec. 1 release, which is hitting record bins alongside new albums from R. Kelly and the Bravery, features the three mezzo-sopranos covering the likes of “You Spin Me Round” (the Dead or Alive original, not the Flo Rida spinoff), Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is” and, of course, the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me.”
But there are also some perplexing choices: Given the Chipmunks’ vocal idiosyncrasies, covering the Bee Gees (“Stayin’ Alive”) seems kind of redundant. Stranger still is the decision to remake Katy Perry’s “Hot N Cold” instead of the more obvious “I Kissed a Squirrel.”
The film itself opens Dec. 23, just in time for Oscar consideration.
