Best Gas Station Dining

Rita's Mexican Restaurant
8655 W. U.S. Highway 24, 684-9340

You'll find Rita's at the eclectic Bust, CO General Store (now pop. 2) on Ute Pass. The combination gas station/ convenience store/ restaurant/ Mexican decorations establishment is owned and operated by a family originally from Mexico City and recently from Taos. Rita's food reflects this background. It is full-flavored and as homemade as you will find outside of an actual home. Try the Carne Adobada for a tasty beef dish. However, my favorite is the Chicken Mol. Rita's mole sauce -- great over chicken -- is a strangely perfect combination of chocolate and spicy flavors. Orders are prepared to go also, so stop in if you're heading down the pass to work or heading up the pass to home or the mountains. (SL)
