Maketa's department gets NRA cash

El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa was out in force again Wednesday, hosting a rally on the lawn of the Pioneers Museum to support the recall of Colorado Senate President John Morse.

Maketa has been one of the loudest critics the gun laws Morse championed, which include universal background checks and limits on magazine sizes. In fact, Maketa posted a detailed description of today's rally — which he claims drew "over 200," though it looked more like 100 from our perspective — on his Facebook page.

In the rambling post, he makes a special point of saying, "We also had two very special guests who are the actual citizens who initiated these grass roots recall effort. The [sic] are not the NRA, they are not the 'big money' gun lobby, they are just people who care and demonstrated extraordinary courage and passion for a cause they they believe in."

Speaking of the National Rife Association ... the group has been quite kind to Maketa lately. This Tuesday, the NRA Foundation gifted Maketa's department $3,500.

The NRA has also formed a special nonprofit to support the recall effort. Of course, recall supporters aren't the only ones to see big money from big names. A Whole Lot of People for John Morse has received funds from New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, among other high-profile donors.
